Fighting the Pandemic in Multiple Dimensions

by Deren Li, Lite Shi

Facing the unexpected novel coronavirus pneumonia, Prof. Li Deren and his colleagues used space-based remote sensing and geospatial technologies to fight the epidemic prevention battle in Wuhan, providing trustworthy technical support for epidemic prevention and control.

Using remote sensing technology to provide professional service against the epidemic

On January 25, the first day of the lunar Chinese New Year, the third day of Wuhan's shutdown, Prof. Li Deren and Prof. Zhang Guo took the lead to establish a joint working group composed of backbone researchers from different units in remote sensing. By means of space-based remote sensing, they assessed the impact of the construction of Huoshenshan and Leishenshan hospitals on the surrounding environment, satisfied the public's concerns about epidemic prevention and control from the spatial perspective, and witnessed the speed and power of the Chinese pandemic response from the perspective of space-based remote sensing. In a very short period of time, satellite scheduling, data processing, and coordination of tasks were completed efficiently. Remotely sensed satellite imagery of the hospital construction work was updated every day. Ever since the launch on Global Network Blog on January 29, the remote sensing satellite images were quickly forwarded and continuously tracked by more than 300 media, such as People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Youth Daily, China.org.cn, XWH.cn, and China Comment, addressing the concerns of more than 100 million people.

Epidemic prevention and control is a systematic battle; while the medical front is the main battlefield, urban emergency management is an indispensable piece of the puzzle. During the fight against the epidemic, geospatial information technology was deployed in all aspects, such as traffic guidance management, transportation of prevention and control materials, robots for disinfection, food and medical equipment deliveries to the hospitals, as well as the logistical management of 4000 electric bikes provided for medical personnel to get to and from work. Geospatial technologies were also used to assist realization of fine grid city management, which has played an important role in the quarantine and treatment of confirmed or potential patients.

Offering advice and suggestions to support scientific decision-making

In the critical period of the fight against the epidemic, Prof. Li and his team fully exploited the advantages of WHU’s disciplined and talented personnel, and cooperated with Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Wu Manqing’s team from the China Electronics Technology Corporation. They made a comprehensive analysis and scientific study in a timely manner of the development of the epidemic, prevention and control measures and put forward suggestions for the central government to carry out public epidemic prevention and control services, based on location-based spatio-temporal big data. It was an urgent task to make full use of big data from mobile phones, to identify people who should be isolated, the key persons to trace, and those who were risk-free, contributing to the restoration of normal social order. Li Deren's team, in cooperation with relevant universities in Wuhan, also developed an epidemic prevention and control service system for the universities, helping to prevent and control the epidemic on campus, accurately and efficiently.

When the epidemic was almost under control, the Central Government attached great importance to the resumption of work and production. Li Deren led Associate Professor Li Xi`s team who utilized the night light remote sensing technology to evaluate progress on the resumption of work and production, and developed an appropriate night light remote sensing data mining methodology. The research report on "Night Light Remote Sensing Monitoring Shows the Resumption of Work and Production in the Three Major Coastal Cities in China Are Improving Steadily" provided critical empirical support for the Central Government to deal with the epidemic scientifically.

      Virtual Event Nice 2020

ISPRS organises virtual event for the XXIV Congress edition of 2020
bar

Nearly everything goes digital during the COVID-19 crisis, so does ISPRS. While the next physical Congress will be held in July 2021, many of the contributions submitted for the 2020 edition will be presented in the XXIV ISPRS Congress – Virtual event of the 2020 presentations which will take place on-line from August 31 to September 2nd, 2020, see http://www.isprs2020-nice.com/index.php/virtualevent-2/ for details.

More than 300 authors with accepted contributions will share their thoughts and results with the ISPRS community. This is a unique opportunity for ISPRS to experiment with what we believe may be a permanent component of our future scientific meetings – the possibility for a remote participation as a presenter and as professional wanting to learn about new developments.

The 2020 edition will be free of charge for presenters and for the audience (but a pre-registration is mandatory in order to calibrate the bandwidth of live streaming). Please feel free to spread this information to your network.

In this way, we hope to enlarge the impact of our activities also in the long run by reaching out to those groups who – also under “normal” circumstances – may find it difficult to physically join our events, or who prefer to reduce their carbon footprint. For your information, we will include remote presentation and participation for the 2021 Congress as well.

Christian Heipke, ISPRS President

Nicolas Paparoditis, ISPRS Congress Director
