Laurent Polidori

Dear colleagues,

If you attend the next ISPRS Congress, high-level communications will be offered during the technical sessions, but do not miss the opportunity to attend the parallel forum track and participate in one of the six fora that will be organized to address the interactions between science, public organizations, industry and decision-makers on hot topics of the geospatial community.

Each forum will be a discussion meeting at the interface between science and society on topics for which the photogrammetry and remote sensing community (ISPRS) can inspire political and industrial decision making. The forum is not the main place to present scientific innovations (which is the scope of the technical sessions organized by the ISPRS commissions) but the good place to address the impact of innovations and the role our community could play in this changing context for « building a better future together » by providing collective visions and/or roadmaps.

Six fora are scheduled during the Congress, dedicated to a variety of topics such as the role of Space, Mapping and Cadastral Agencies, Earth observation for disaster management and climate change mitigation, Geotechnologies for tracking progress towards the sustainable development goals, Openness and Innovation in Geomatics and Earth Observation, smart cities and mobilities, autonomous navigation, cultural heritage, etc. They will be the subject of intense and inspiring presentations and panel discussions mixing experts from various levels and communities.

Each forum will lead to a written synthesis of the views and recommendations of the ISPRS community concerning the respective topics. The output documents will be collected and organized by the International Policy Advisory Committee (IPAC) to help ISPRS to fully play its role as a scientific society in a complex world by providing roadmaps for the next term.

We invite you to read the programme of the forum track on the Congress website very soon, and we look forward to your active participation in these discussions on the benefits of photogrammetry and remote sensing to society.

Laurent Polidori
Congress Vice-Director, Forum Track Coordinator

Automatic plagiarism check for all ISPRS proceedings
bar

In the recent past, plagiarism has also reached ISPRS. In a number of cases, papers published in ISPRS proceedings had to be withdrawn after publication for this reason. In order to avoid the unpleasant circumstances accompanying such a withdrawal process in the future and to encourage authors to show an ethical publication behaviour, ISPRS will provide an automatic plagiarism check for proceedings papers. The process was developed together with our publisher Copernicus GmbH and will use the software iThenticate, employed for detecting plagiarisms in many scientific contributions worldwide. The service will be implemented for all ISPRS events producing Annals and /or Archive publications for which the contract between the event organiser and Copernicus GmbH is signed after Dec. 31,2019. The cost will be an additional 1,50 € excl. VAT per paper.

Papers submitted to the Annals will be transferred to Copernicus directly after the full-paper to be reviewed is submitted, i.e. prior to the full-paper review. In contrast to this, for an Archive submission, the final camera-ready paper is checked. The results of the check are made available to the programme committee chair of the event. In case of suspicion of plagiarism, he/she will contact the author(s) and ask for an explanation. If the doubts persist, the programme committee and the ISPRS Secretary General are to be notified, who will take a final decision about the paper; see also Appendix 4 of the Orange Book, https://www.isprs.org/documents/orangebook/app4.aspx.

In this way we hope to maintain the high level of quality of the ISPRS proceedings publications. We also hope this new service is accepted by both the ISPRS event organisers and the authors of our proceedings as another step to increase the value of their publication.

Survey Invitation - Share your thoughts on the potential transition of the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing to a Gold Open Access publication
bar

Following industry trends, ISPRS is investigating the potential transition of the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing from a subscription-based model to Gold Open Access. Note that the ISPRS Journal of Geo-Information is already and Open Access publication. To better understand the authors’ perspective and to better access the opinion of the publishing community, the ISPRS Council, jointly with the publisher, Elsevier, have decided to run a survey. Authors who have submitted a paper to the journal in the past two years will be directly invited to take part in the survey by Elsevier. However, the ISPRS community at large are also invited to take part in this process.

To complete to the survey, please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ST9QX3X. Note, to avoid repeated submissions, it is only possible to access the link once.

GEO and Google Earth Engine Call
bar

GEO and Google Earth Engine announce a call to action for projects to monitor the pulse of our planet.

Dear colleagues,

Shared data means everything to Earth observation researchers. If we hope to solve global problems such as climate change, open data is at the heart of finding answers. Sharing is at the heart of GEO’s latest call to action.

In partnership with Google, GEO will select 25 project proposals to receive licenses for Google Earth Engine, to be used to tackle significant societal challenges and improve understanding of our planet.

Google is providing these licenses, valued at US$3 million, to broaden the use of Earth observation data. In keeping with GEO's goal of promoting openly shared data, we require that the chosen projects offer the results of their work to the open science community, including code, algorithms, datasets and results.

Big data from openly available Earth observations offers a wealth of opportunities for the open science community to produce new research and applications, since these datasets supply critical, objective information about the world’s oceans, forests, and key biodiversity indicators. All of these represent vital signs regarding the health of our Earth’s ecosystems and will help measure the pulse of the planet.

More details can be found on the website here.

If you’re interested in proposing your project for a free Earth Engine license, please submit your proposal via this Application Form to dcripe@geosec.org by March 15, 2020.
