Call for ISPRS Awards ends on 1 January

Dear colleagues and friends,

I would like to remind you that the deadline for nominations for the ISPRS Awards is approaching. January 1st is less than one month away and we have received quite a few nominations. The proposals for the individual awards will be evaluated by the respective juries. In order for the juries to select the best from the best, Council would appreciate more nominations to have a wide range of deserved experts. Therefore, I am addressing you once again to ask you to nominate exceptional colleagues whose achievements within ISPRS are unique and worthy.

ISPRS presents almost twenty awards, however, not all are selected from nominations. There are three awards that are given to best papers from the three ISPRS journals: the U.V. Helava Award, the Jack Dangermond Award, the Fritz Ackermann Award.

CATCON (Computer Assisted Teaching CONtest) and Best Poster Awards are decided during the Congress from the evaluation of juries onsite. The Presidents’ Honorary Citation award can only be proposed by the Technical Commission Presidents.

Several awards are self-nominated awards, such as the ISPRS Best Young Author Award.

Terms of Reference for the individual awards can be found at https://www.isprs.org/society/awards.aspx.

Thank you very much for your cooperation. We look forward to receiving additional nominations by the deadline, which can be submitted via the ISPRS online nomination portal page.

President’s Message

Dear colleagues and friends,

I would like to share with you my experience from four ISPRS events that I attended this year, which took place on four different continents.

The first one, Geospatial Week 2025 (GSW 2025) was held in Dubai on 6-11 April. The GSW was combined with a large exhibition dedicated mainly to local exhibitors. I was impressed not only by the entire preparation of the event, but by a large group of mainly female students from the region who presented results from their universities and organisations during the exhibition with passion and enthusiasm. Mohamed Bin Rashid Space Centre proved that the combination of its own space research together with the ISPRS scientific meeting was a very good choice. Saeed Al Mansoori and Ghariba Salem’s preparation of the GSW 2025 was appreciated by strong applause from the participants.

The EARSeL (European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories) Symposium was the second one which took place in Prague, my home city. The event focused on basic research and applications of remote sensing, and is an annual event, mainly European, always with a few scientists from other continents. The participants expressed their interest though the high attendance during all days of the Symposium. Eva Matoušková, Chair of the Symposium, together with Auletris, its PCO, prepared a very pleasant meeting in a sincere and family-like atmosphere.

LAGIRS, the third, is an example of one event organised in cooperation: between two societies, who brought the idea of an ISPRS & IEEE GRSS Latin American event, and a third society, SELPER Brazil, who organised the first of this series in Itaipú, near Foz do Iguaçú in Brazil, on 10-13 November. The strong interest in ISPRS topics was encouraging, so that organising LAGIRS again in two years in Latin America may certainly become a reality. SELPER Brazil under the leadership of Hilcéa Ferreira, made the LAGIRS 2025 unforgettable, also thanks to the sincere and pleasant atmosphere at the Itaipu Binacional, Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. The venue of the conference, the Itaipu Parquetec, is one of Foz do Iguaçu’s most remarkable environments for science, technology, and innovation, that serves as a dynamic hub for education, research, and technological development.

The fourth event is the Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Conference 2025,  held in Suva, Fiji, on 24-27 November. It is an annual event organised by the Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council, the ISPRS Regional Member, under the leadership of Wolf Forstreuter, its founder, and Bradley Eichelberger, its Chair, together with the entire PGRSC Board.  Participants followed not only presentations offering a wide range of applications in the Pacific Region, but also a round table dedicated to women and their professional lives in remote sensing and GIS. Four ladies of different ages showed that these two branches have a stable position in their lives in spite of their traditionally female everyday duties. The conference took place in the premises of the University of South Pacific, where many participants of the conference had studied.

All four events, which took place in remote locations of the world, proved that ISPRS has strong support in our topics, and from various generations throughout the world. Three of the organisers are ISPRS Regional Members: EARSeL, SELPER Brazil and PGRSC.
It is encouraging for the future, seeing our results and tools being increasingly implemented in everyday human lives.

ISPRS can be proud of these events for many aspects: dedication to the science, technology and the increasing range of applications; passion for work in this area; interest in endless learning and new achievements of ISPRS members and of the participants of ISPRS events.

I am very grateful to the organisers for their energy and personal influence which resulted in the successful final results of these events.

Martin Weinmann

We are pleased to share again the official announcement that, as of 1 January 2026, Dr. Martin Weinmann will assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of the ISPRS Open Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (IOJPRS).

Dr. Weinmann, Assistant Professor at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), is well known within the ISPRS community for his significant contributions to photogrammetry and remote sensing — particularly in aerial optical and LiDAR point cloud processing and analysis. Over recent years, he has served as an Associate Editor of the ISPRS International Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Prof. George Vosselman, the current Editor-in-Chief, for his tremendous work over the past five years — from successfully launching the journal to attracting high-quality submissions. Thanks to his leadership, IOJPRS has been officially selected for indexing in the Web of Science, with its first Impact Factor expected in the first half of 2026.

Congratulations to Dr. Weinmann on this new role, and heartfelt thanks to Prof. Vosselman for his dedication and vision in establishing IOJPRS as a leading publication in our field.
